Yeghia Nersesian, an Armenian environmental activist, was the guest speaker at "Averting Environmental Disaster: Solutions to Irresponsible Mining," an event held at C&E Merdinian Armenian Evangelical School in Sherman Oaks, California, on December 16, 2012. Nersesian's lecture was followed by a Q&A session. At the end of the video, a number of people from the audience send their personal message to Armenia's civil society.

Yeghia is a great front-man for the environmental movement in Armenia and he's full of contagious energy that can hopefully stir Armenians in the diaspora to finally take some practical measures to assist the nascent civil society movement there. But what I find to be lacking on the part of Yeghia and others back in Armenia are 1) specifics as to how people in the diaspora can help; i.e. the lead has too come from Armenia. They should come up with a wish list. 2) better PR and grassroots organizing. 3) getting people, both in diaspora an especially Armenia, to understand the linkage between the environmental and broader democratic struggle. This can only be accomplished through civic/civil participation and action, as Yeghia rightly notes.
